PAST PRESIDENTS' PARLEY NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria:

1. A scholarship in the amount of $2.000.00 shall be awarded annually to a veteran or a veteran’s wife or husband, widow, or widower, or child of a veteran of the World Wars, Korea, Vietnam Conflict, Grenada/Lebanon, Panama, and/or Persian Gulf wars. Applications may be submitted by students planning to enter or are currently enrolled in an accredited nursing school for the purpose of earning a Licensed Vocational Nurse, Registered Nurse or other recognized nursing degree. The Scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who most fully meets the requirements for admission to an accredited California nursing school and who provides evidence of the greatest need for financial assistance. All applications must be mailed to the nearest American Legion Auxiliary Unit and received no later than April 3, 2009.

2. Students wishing to apply for the Nurse’s Scholarship may do so by downloading the application from the Department web site www.calegionaux.org under Past President’s Parley Scholarship. Units may also make copies of the scholarship application and distribute them. Only the application for 2008- 2009 will be accepted.

3. Scholarships in lesser amounts may be donated provided the funds are available. This of course will depend upon the amount of donations that are donated by the Units and/or Districts. When making donations to the Department Office please earmark them for the Past President’s Parley Nurses Scholarship.

4. To be eligible to apply for the Nurse’s Scholarship you must be a child, spouse, widow/widower or a veteran in your own right who is or was in the Armed Forces of the United States during the following periods: April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918; December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946; June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955; February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975; August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984; December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990; August 2, 1990 to cessation of hostilities.

5. Applicants planning to enter an accredited nursing school must attach the following:

  1. a. A letter of recommendation from your principal or a letter from a school official of the school last attended.
  2. b. A written opinion from a doctor as to the applicant’s physical and emotional fitness for nurse’s training.
  3. c. Two reference letters attesting to character and aptitude (may be from school officials, clergyman, former employer or a personal friend).
  4. d. A Letter signed by a parent, guardian or applicant (if not a minor) describing financial circumstances of family, to set forth a need for assistance.
  5. e. Transcript of grades. f. An acceptance letter from a chosen nursing school before disbursement of funds are made.

6. Applicants already enrolled and in training must attach the following:

  1. a. A letter from the nursing school, which includes scholastic standing (transcript or grades), character rating, and recommendation for continuance of schooling.
  2. b. A letter signed by a parent, guardian or applicant (if not a minor) describing financial circumstances of family, to set forth the need for assistance
