We have now entered in the new age of Information Technology where computers have assumed a strategic importance. Apart from the corporate world they are also being efficiently utilized in other fields that range from food processing to space exploration and banking to communication. However, they also introduce various risk factors, which are often out of control. This is where the various organizations need the help of information technology specialists.

Why a career in Information Technology:

In the contemporary world, information technology has opened several career opportunities which include hardware manufacture, telecommunications services, packaged software development, computers, telecommunication equipment manufacture, and several information technology professional services. In fact the employment market has also responded splendidly to this high rising demand for information technology skills due to various reasons. These are:

  • The greater employment opportunities and remuneration in comparison to other professions.
  • Relatively shorter training period as for the programmers sometime it might take only a few months and even at times new technical skills can be learnt in a few days.
  • This profession sometime involves low barriers to enter the field and also low initial trainings.

This ever rising demand for information technology skills has also brought forward a number of information technology training as one of the crucial way to expand and develop ones professional as well as personal opportunities.

The functional areas of information technology are broadly divided into two sub-categories- hardware and software.

Functional areas in Hardware:

  • Manufacturing that engrosses the work of production as well as assembling the various components of computer systems.
  • Maintenance i.e. looking after the smooth and proper functioning of the machine and also helping in identifying and repairing the crash in them. It also helps to take various precautionary measures so as to minimize the amount of damage caused to the computer systems and peripherals.

Functional areas in Software :

  • Software development involves developing as well as updating the existing operations. It also includes the improvement and refining of those operation systems. This whole procedure is carried out in various stages, which include analysis, designing, construction, and implementation.
  • Programmers/ Coders write as well as test programs and also convert the strategies of the system analyst into real working programs.
