With the costs of college continuing to rise, borrowing money for your education has become one of the best investments that you can make. This is the reason why education financial aid is so important these days. It comes in various forms like grants, scholarship money, work-study and loans. Applying for the financial aids can be a lengthy process and but the results are worthy enough.

Here are the steps that you require to follow:

  • You should receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the government, some three to six weeks after you submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must check over this report carefully to make ensure that the information from your FAFSA is correct. This information will be sent to the schools to which you have applied.
  • Next, the SAR lists your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) indicating how much your family should be able to contribute to your educational expenses. This amount depends upon the family income. This number is critical to your financial aid package as it determines your financial need.
  • After the paperwork is over, the financial aid office of each college will put together a financial aid package. This package comprises of the federal and non-federal aid such as loans, grants, scholarship money, or a work-study program to help meet your needs.
  • The educational costs vary from school to school and this it’s difficult to estimate exactly how much financial aid you will receive. The different colleges participate in the various financial aid programs and have varying amounts of grant money to award. However, each school’s financial aid office does its best to make up the gap between the EFC and the cost of attending that school.
  • As soon as the process gets complete, you will receive the financial aid award letter from your schools of interest. Each letter will outline the types and amount of financial assistance that school is offering for that particular year.
  • After receiving the award letters, be sure to compare the aid packages offered by the different schools. This is so because even though one school may appear less expensive, it may not contain the best deal for you.

Take the next steps.

Before enrolling, make appointments to visit the colleges or career
schools you’re considering. Bring a list of questions to ask school
representatives. Your education is a major investment, so find out
as much information as you can before you enroll.
What kind of information should I get from
a school?

• Ask about the school’s accreditation,* licensing and
campus security.
• Find out the school’s loan default* rate (the percentage
of students who attended the school, took out federal
student loans and failed to repay their loans on time).
You might not be able to get aid from some of our
programs at a school that has a high default* rate.
• Find out the school’s job placement rates (the percentage
of students who are placed in jobs relevant to their
courses of study).
If the school advertises its job placement rates, it must
also publish:
• the most recent employment statistics,
• graduation statistics, and
• any other information necessary to back up
its claims.

Getting financial help for College

November 16th, 2008 by theProfessor

It is no doubt that college costs money no matter what kind of school you go to. That is the exact number one reason as to why many students end up having high school diplomas only. However, the saying, “If there’s a will, there’s a way” should be applicable to this scenario. If only a student is truly determined to pursue a college degree, he would find means to finance his studies and this is where financial aid comes in.

Financial aid may come in different forms. There are athletic based scholarships, grants, project-based support programs and loans among others. A student must be very scrupulous both in picking out the kind of financial aid he wants to apply to and when actually applying already. Scholarship scams are rampant so a student might want to be very careful. Once a scholarship program has been picked out, tables are turned so the student then wants to be highly accurate in following all the procedures from the kind of form to use to the submission and selection process. Scholarships are extremely coveted so providers will not think twice about dismissing incompletely or incorrectly filled-out applications. A student must be very aware of all the requirements, must take directions by heart. The selective process will further filter out hopeful applicants so a student must be confident and self-directing to know how to earn that grant.

The lack of financial resource should never impede a student’s dream of pursuing a degree. With proper knowledge, preparation and tons of self-confidence, that Bachelor’s Degree should not remain just a dream for long.

If you are planning to opt for a tuition assistance program, it would be good if you are fully aware of the various aspects associated with these programs. These are:-

  • Employer pays directly: Your employer will pay for your educational program at the beginning of the course; as such you do not have to spend any amount personally.
  • Employer reimburses after completion of the course: The employer pays after the completion of the whole educational program or after completion of every semester. In this type the employee may have to pay from his own pocket initially.
  • Educational materials and tools: Employers may pay for various study materials and tools like textbooks, computing equipment and other supplies. The payment may be made upfront or reimbursed at the discretion of the employer.
  • Travel Assistance: The employer pays for any expenditure on travel related to education or professional development like attending conventions/ conventions or courses at institutions which are located at a distance.
  • Leave: The employer may provide tuition assistance on the condition that the employee has to attend office regularly but there may be employers who allow their employees to take leave for the duration of the educational program and do deduct it from their dedicated personal holidays as well.
  • Training on the Job: Many employers have developed detailed training programs which are as good as conventional educational training programs. In these programs employees get trained while working on their jobs. Several employers also tie up with local community colleges which award credits to the employees who complete the training programs.
  • Tuition Assistance for spouses and dependents: There are companies which also provide tuition assistance to the spouses or other dependents of their employees.
  • Savings Program for College: Some companies offer a savings program for education of their employees. In such programs the employee would be making regular contributions and these contributions would be matched by the employer.

Students Loans And Their Benefits

Though education should is the fundamental right of every human being, it has unfortunately become prohibitively expensive. The rising cost of tuition fees, prices of books and other study materials, hostel and other living expenses, has made it very difficult for students to carry on with higher studies. Many intelligent students, with bright futures leave studies because they are unable to arrange for the required finances. This is extremely sad and should never happen with anyone who aspires to have a good education.

A student who is not being able to pay for his college or university expenses, should consider taking a student loan, instead of taking the drastic step of giving up studies. Students’ loans have a lot of benefits. They cover students’ expenses for the following things:

  • Tuition fees
  • Cost of study materials/books
  • Living expenses

Students can ask for the amount they would need to fund their years in college/university. The government stands as a guarantee for the student loans, so the credit ratings of the applicants are usually not checked.

However students, who are planning to take loans, should keep the following things in mind:

  • They should be careful while managing their personal finances. They should calculate the right amount needed by them, so that they do not end up borrowing more than they need. This would unnecessarily increase the burden on them while paying back.
  • They should spend the loan amount carefully, so that it serves the need it has been taken for. Quite often students spend the loan money, in things other than studies and later on land in a soup. Students should ensure that they do not land in such a position
  • The students should start paying of the loan as soon as they can afford, so that they do not end up paying an unnecessary amount of interest.

Convincing Your Employers To Provide Tuition Assistance

People who are working and would like to further their education, but cannot afford to pay the cost of tuition and other charges, often look towards educational loans for assistance. But educational loans come with the obligation of paying back. And the payback includes the principal amount plus the accumulated interest.

Though student loans are extremely helpful to most people, the folks who are already employed have another handsome option in their hand that is, getting the desired degree without spending anything at all! Now how is that possible? It sounds too good to be true…these are some of the questions that must be coming to your mind right now. But then you have to believe that it is true, there are conditions involved, but none so tough that you will not be able to fulfill. What is being referred to here is known as tuition assistance program. According to this program the employers reimburse the expenses that the employee incurred for taking a degree, while working for them. Now why would any employer do such a thing? Unless he or she is s great charitable soul…the reality is that the employers needn’t be a charitable soul to do this. They can profit from funding their employees’ education.

Now if the company you work for, already has a tuition reimbursement program in place, then your task has been made much easier. You only have to get in touch with the people concerned with executing the program and get to know how you could take advantage of the program. But if your company does not have any such program, then you can talk to your employer and convince him/her by telling how it would benefit the company. You can take the following things in to account:-

· You will be able to take up more important/challenging responsibilities.

· The education would update your knowledge and skills, which would enhance your productivity.

· You will be able to bring in new ideas.

· You will be trained with new skills that will help you take up additional work.

Work For Your College To Get Tuition Discount

August 25th, 2008 by Jason Stollham
Jason Stollham

There are a large number of students who look for part time jobs while continuing their college courses. Therefore, several colleges and Universities in United States are offering a tuition discounts to their students, if they work for them. In fact working for your college will not only help you to earn a discount in your fees, but will also help you to get familiar with the college administration.

The following are some important factors you need to remember for getting tuition grants if you are working for your college:

  • You will be getting discount only for job related and career enhancement courses offered by the college.

  • These tuition discounts are available only if there is space for additional students without eliminating any tuition paying student.

  • Most of the colleges and Universities limit these types of grants to nine semester hours per academic year.

  • In case you are opting for regular classes you will need to present an approval letter from your reporting head. In addition you will also have to make up the time lost for your classes.

  • This tuition discount is applicable only for your tuition fees. The colleges do not grant discounts for books, study materials, room and food charges as well as for lab and other mandatory fees.

  • As an employee of the college, the monetary value of your tuition grants may also be subject to income tax. Therefore you will need to fulfill the Internal Revenue Code requirements.

  • Before enrolling for the course you will need to get written approval from your direct head.

Though some colleges have made this facility limited only for their regular full time employees, you can also apply for this grant if you are the child, spouse or grandchild of any full time staff or faculty member. However, if you are an employee the college admin will expect you to give more priority to your work responsibilities.

Grants For Minority Students

August 25th, 2008 by Jason Stollham

It is an unfortunate scenario and an ugly truth that many minority Americans find it extremely difficult to get themselves the desired education, only due to the lack of funds. But all hope is not lost for such students as the American Government understands there plight, and is making significant efforts, to fund the education of the deserving minority students.

The Higher Education Multicultural Scholars Program is an example of the government’s initiative in this area. This program has been designed to help students from the minority, who may be interested in developing a career in agri-science or agri-business. It provides financial aid to the students through colleges and universities. Along with helping minority students to have a decent shot at getting good education, this program also helps in channeling the work force towards the areas of agricultural science, food, forestry, natural resources and various other agricultural fields. It has been estimated that more than $900,000 has been kept aside for helping out minority Americans. These grants range from $20,000 to $80,000.

Minority Americans should make use of these opportunities, by looking out for them, so that they can get the benefits. If one searches for grants, one would be easily able to find thousands of sources that award non-repayable grants. And these grants are not only restricted to the area of education, they cover a wide range of requirements, from medical assistance, employment, housing to many other opportunities. Though the government is trying its best to help out the minority Americans with financial assistance, every year millions of dollars worth of grant money is left unused, simply because enough people do not apply for them. The reason behind this is the lack of awareness. So minority Americans who think they would be able to benefit from such opportunities should start looking actively for them.
