Getting financial help for College

November 16th, 2008 by theProfessor

It is no doubt that college costs money no matter what kind of school you go to. That is the exact number one reason as to why many students end up having high school diplomas only. However, the saying, “If there’s a will, there’s a way” should be applicable to this scenario. If only a student is truly determined to pursue a college degree, he would find means to finance his studies and this is where financial aid comes in.

Financial aid may come in different forms. There are athletic based scholarships, grants, project-based support programs and loans among others. A student must be very scrupulous both in picking out the kind of financial aid he wants to apply to and when actually applying already. Scholarship scams are rampant so a student might want to be very careful. Once a scholarship program has been picked out, tables are turned so the student then wants to be highly accurate in following all the procedures from the kind of form to use to the submission and selection process. Scholarships are extremely coveted so providers will not think twice about dismissing incompletely or incorrectly filled-out applications. A student must be very aware of all the requirements, must take directions by heart. The selective process will further filter out hopeful applicants so a student must be confident and self-directing to know how to earn that grant.

The lack of financial resource should never impede a student’s dream of pursuing a degree. With proper knowledge, preparation and tons of self-confidence, that Bachelor’s Degree should not remain just a dream for long.

Being a student requires a lot of time and attention. It’s unfortunate that a huge number of college students feel the need to find a means to earn money while attempting to keep a balance between school work and other things. It’s a good thing most colleges have options for students that are ideal for their set-up given that most of their time are devoted to academics.

Student employment is a wide-spread offering among colleges and universities. Schools feel the need to provide such kind of opportunity to their students not only for those who need income but also to give the students a chance to gain as many skills to prepare them for future employment after graduation. After all, how the school’s graduates will perform in their future jobs will be a reflection of the kind of training they received from their school.

A student can check out the kinds of employment offered by his school. Basically though, jobs will vary from providing clerical assistance to more technical support. Wages are minimal but aren’t bad at all. However, a student must keep in mind that there are qualifications to become employed by the school. For one, academic performance has a great bearing. The number of credits enrolled in by the student matters as well. It may be different for every school so it’s best to personally check out what may best suit the student.

Being in college is absolutely a breeding ground for future movers in different industries so knowing the options and opportunities is highly advisable so one can take advantage of whatever will aid him in getting ahead early on.

What to do with a noisy neighbor

Whether you are taking your bachelors degree or masters degree, chances are you have experienced wanting to study or relax but could not because the student next to you is so loud and obnoxious?  Loud music, loud voices, and raucous crowds are normal in a college dormitory.  But how do we get past all the noise pollution when we need peace and quiet?

First thing, and probably the best thing to do, is to come up to their room and politely ask them if they can lower it down a bit.  Most people listen and are reasonable enough if you approach them correctly.  More often times than not, they will lower their music or voices when asked politely, as they would do the same to you if you are a bit loud.

If direct approach does not seem to work, you can always try to put on some headphones.  It is not the most convenient way, but at least you get to filter out the sound from the other rooms. Although this method most likely will last only for so long as it will be uncomfortable if put on for very long periods of time.

If none of the other two work, you can always resort to letting your resident assistant, or RA, know about the issue. You might not have the authority to tell them to quiet down, but definitely your RA can sure do.  However, doing this can sour things between yourself and your neighbors, so try to be very discreet when you take this approach.

How To Read Books

One important thing a student would need to do while getting their bachelors degree is to be able to read books. When finishing one’s online education, one would get new information about the lesson through reading books. When studying, one must know the importance of reading books in order to add to their knowledge about the subject matter. Here are some tips to reading books in order to get the most out of them.

Read the book slowly. Do not browse through the book when you want to understand the concepts and theories it is trying to teach you.  You can browse the book to see what general topics you will be encountering. But digest each page well. It is important that each point be understood well. You do not need to rush because rushing would only give you a gist of what you are supposed to know.

If you come across you do not understand, spend time on that portion. Take the time to make sure that you understand. Do not leave a section that you do not understand because the succeeding sections might depend on your grasp of the other previous sections.

If there is an important statement you want to put emphasis on, take the time to digest that also. Digest the important parts because these key points all play important roles in your grasp of the subject matter.

Do not leave a book after reading it once. It is always good to read it twice or thrice because the more you read, the more your brain will absorb the information.

During your stay in college, it is inevitable that you come across a class or some online courses that do not seem to be your forte. Sometimes it is because of this that you would find that you failed this class. What are you supposed to do when you find out that you failed a class?

Do not fret too much. Check the schedule and find out when that particular class will be offered again. Choose a different timeslot for that class. Perhaps it was too early in the morning which was why you had a hard time concentrating. You might also want to get a different professor for that class or those online classes. Perhaps the teaching style was not best suited for you.

Get notes from other people who have taken that class too. Their notes might be helpful in making you further understand the lesson being taught.

You might want to hire a tutor. If you really feel that you cannot understand the lesson being taught, it might be time to look for help. A tutor would be knowledgeable about the lesson and would be able to help you better understand what the teacher is trying to explain to you.

Join study groups. Sometimes it helps to discuss things with your peers. They might be able to help you understand things better.

Lastly talk to your teacher. Discuss the points which you do not understand with the teacher. The teacher will be more than willing to discuss the key points with you.

How To Write Essays

November 3rd, 2008 by theProfessor

One of the things a student dreads doing in school is coming up with an essay. Many students find it difficult to think of a topic and to build on that topic and make it into a long essay. But in order to get your online certificates from the different online universities, you need to write essays as part of the requirement. For those who find it difficult writing essays, here is a quick way to start up.

Think of topics close to your heart. If the topic is dear enough to you, researching and writing about it will not be as much as a chore as writing about something you do not care about. Make a shortlist of all the topics you like and then pick the one you want to know about the most.  Once you have your topic, think of ways to obtain the information about the topic. Plan how you would be able to get this information. Start searching the internet for additional information to back up your research. Go to the library and look for books that could also help give you more information. Always remember to take down notes.

When you are done with your data gathering, you can now sit down and start writing. Make sure you paraphrase and quote the author so you will not be accused of plagiarizing. Once you are done writing, have someone proofread it. Get their comments and try to take their comments into consideration to be able to come up with a better essay.

November 3rd, 2008 by theProfessor

One very difficult thing to do during college is to be able to eat properly. Students would often just grab a juice pack between classes. When they are very tired, they would grab a candy bar to give them energy to keep them going to the different classes needed for their college degrees. Even if you take an online degree program, one should always remember that eating properly is a must. It is with what we eat that we are able to function to the best level that we can.

Make sure that you drink eight glasses of water a day. Your body needs to be properly hydrated for it to work well. Other liquids such as juices and teas would be good. But water is still the best.

Make sure that you do get to eat vegetables. The leafy green vegetables are the best for digestion. Also take the time to eat fruits for the body needs the minerals and vitamins it gets from fruits and vegetables.

Do not forget to also take proteins. Meat is fine but try not to eat too much chicken skin. That is not too good for the heart.

Even if you are in a rush, always remember to eat breakfast. This will set the rate your metabolism will go for the day. Eat a proper breakfast. You can have a light lunch or light dinner but a heavy breakfast is a must because the nutrients from this breakfast will push you throughout the day.

One of the hardest things to do in college is to stay fit. There are so many things that can throw us off our diet. There is the place you always get your dessert fix everyday. There is also a franchise of McDonalds around the corner. There are also many things to be finished that you tend to forget to exercise. Before you know it, you gained ten pounds. Here are some tips to stay fit during college.

Always eat breakfast. It might be hard to remember to eat breakfast especially when you are rushing to different campus programs. But breakfast is the most important part of the day. And missing breakfast would slow down your metabolism that would eventually lead to faster weight gain.

Do not binge on junk food. It is fine to eat the occasional servings of cake and fries. But do not eat this on a daily basis. It is not just very unhealthy. But it all goes to the hips.

Drink lots of water. Water would not make you as hungry and will help you cut back from eating food high in calories.

Eat lots of greens and fruits. Vegetables would make your digestive system function better.

Do exercise. Instead of riding a car to the next building, walk to the building. The fresh air would do you good. The walk would also help you trim some inches off the tummy. It will be good if you can set a time every week to exercise. Bring along a friend who might be taking up the same bachelors degree to keep you company.

How To Research Online

November 2nd, 2008 by theProfessor

Internet and computers have made our life easier. When doing our research papers for our online college degree or bachelors degree, we now have the internet to supply us the information we need. Here are some tips when researching online to make the life of each student easier.

Make sure that the source you have chosen is credible. You would want your paper to have the most credible and reliable information on the subject matter. It is always good that you get websites or URLS that end with an .edu like www.ewu.edu/groups/studentlife/Group_Formation.pdf. These sort of websites are usually engineered by universities so they are usually credible as they have done enough research on the matter. Another credible source would be .org URLS. An example would be www.scn.org/cmp/modules/bld-grp.htm. These URLS or web sites are usually updated by organizations that have also done extensive research on the matter.

Use online journals. When in doubt as to whether the website you are reading is credible or not, opt to use an online journal. These are journal articles about certain subjects. These journals are written by people who have done extensive research on this matter and know enough about the subject matter to publish a journal about it.

Lastly when doing online researching, choose search engines that are being used by different universities, such as Google Scholar or http://search.ebscohost.com. All these will ensure that you are putting in the right information in your papers. Always remember to quote the author as to avoid any cases of plagiarism.

Managing Your Time Wisely

November 2nd, 2008 by theProfessor

One of the hardest things to do while taking up any degree or an online degree is in being able to manage your time wisely. There are many distractions when you are at college. You have the different school events. You have friends coming over, inviting you to watch a movie. You have your studies. On top of all this, you have your family demanding for some of your time. It is so easy to get carried away with everything and to find out that you have not accomplished anything.

One way to go about would be to keep a daily planner. With this, you can write down all the things you need accomplished so that you know what things are to be prioritized and what can take a backseat. Take the time everyday to write in that planner. Schedule your day. Be sure to make time for each important part of your life.

Another way would be by avoiding cramming any work. Do not try to finish everything in one day. Learn to prioritize. Finish those that need to be attended to first. Cramming will not get you anywhere also. The quality of the work you produce will also suffer

Lastly learn to say no. If you feel that you really cannot do something, do not commit. Do not over commit if you really feel that you cannot produce what is expected of you. Like taking an associates degree, you have to be able to give your full commitment to anything you plan to do.
