Note-Taking With Mind Maps: An Introduction

Request Free Information From A College

Note-taking is a vital skill that determines how successful we have been in assimilating the knowledge gained during a discussion. However, the traditional methods of taking notes are not effective enough. They consume a lot of time, and miss out on essential concepts. Furthermore, traditional notes are usually not very helpful when studying for examinations. Though they are a quicker and easier option to studying from textbooks, but still, they do take time.

There is another way of note taking, which is a lot more effective than the traditional way. Moreover, it is easier to remember as well; because it is tailored to the way your brain processes and retains information. The method of note-taking I am referring to makes use of mind maps. It also involves the use of your creative imagination.

Apart from the regular note-taking accessories, like pen, pencil and paper, mind maps also require a variety of colors. As the term “mind map” itself suggests, this form of note-taking involves noting down information, in the form of maps. You start of by identifying the core theme of the discussion or lecture, and write it down at the center of the sheet. Then you draw a circle around it. What you have to focus on are the various themes, sub-themes and key words associated with them. You can use your own color coding system, to write down key words of varying importance. Furthermore, you can use various geometrical figures like circle, square, and triangle to denote themes, sub-themes and examples. Then you can join similar concepts with connecting lines.

What you will end up with would look like a colorful map. You may need to get used to making it as well as studying from it. But once you are able to achieve a desirable comfort level. You will find that you are able to take down better quality notes, which are easier to understand and remember. Then you will never go back to the traditional form of note-taking again.
