College advisers mentor students so that they can reach their desired academic goals. A new student entering college may be confused as to what to look for in a college advisor. Most Colleges may assign students to college advisers based on their last name or major. If this is the case, students may want to meet with the assigned advisor and get a sense of the advisers approach to meeting their academic needs. Some students will find that they would prefer a different advisor and should this be the case, scheduling a meeting with a new advisor would be the appropriate next step. Students should draft a list of questions before meeting with the advisor so that after introductions have been made, the advisor can see what needs to be addressed before any other subjects are discussed. The pointers mentioned below present a picture of an ideal college adviser and may help students in selecting the right advisor for themselves:
· Great college advisors are accessible and concerned. They do not shy away or avoid making contact with students by phone or email and are available, personally whenever their students need their guidance and help.
· They are well versed with the various rules and regulations concerning the University as a whole, as well as those related to specific departments, so they are extremely resourceful and have many contacts within the school campus. Some important tasks of college advisors are guiding students on various procedures and policies, as well as clarifying the prerequisites for coursework, research, exams etc for Majors and degrees awarded.
· College advisors provide practical and useful feedback on most issues facing students, which can really impact the students success in class and on campus. Advisors should be able to assess the student well and provide praises or critiques appropriately. They should be able to counsel and guide students who are not doing well, regarding the specific problems that are affecting their performance and how to overcome them. The pressure of academics often overwhelms students; this is where the counseling skills of an advisor would play a significant role and why it is critical for students to feel comfortable with their advisers.
· College advisors should share their own experiences and use them to guide students more effectively.
· They should be able to provide students with opportunities to enhance their professional value, by inviting them to relevant professional conferences and meetings. This would help students gain important insight into the academic environment, as well as to build helpful personal and professional networks.
